Preparing for Ayahuasca

How to Prepare for ayahuasca Ceremony-A Complete Guide

Preparing for an ayahuasca ceremony is often described by facilitators as “the work before the real work.” This ceremony isn’t just about showing up; it’s about preparing your physical body and your mental state to handle an incredibly intense experience.

Below is a guide to navigate you to prepare you physically & Mentally;

The Physical Preparation:

The primary goal of the pre-ceremony diet is to clean your system and avoid dangerous interactions. Ayahuasca contains MAOIs (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors), which can react poorly with certain foods and medications.

What to Avoid one week before retreat:

Tyramine-rich foods: Aged cheeses, soy sauce, fermented foods (kimchi, sauerkraut), and overripe fruits.

Processed Sugars & Salt: Heavy salt and refined sugars are thought to “cloud” the energetic body.

Red Meat & Pork: Most traditions recommend sticking to light proteins like fish or chicken, or going completely vegetarian.

Caffeine & Alcohol: Give your nervous system a break. Stop alcohol at least 7 days prior and taper off caffeine.

Spices: Avoid hot peppers and heavy garlic/onion.

Adequate physical preparation reduces the chances of experiencing difficulties and intense purges during the ceremony. Additionally, following a diet before coming shows commitment and will help you reaffirm your intentions.

Mental Preparation for Ayahuasca

Set an Intention: Why are you doing this? Avoid rigid expectations. Instead, use open-ended intentions like “Show me what I need to see”

Practice Mindfulness: If you don’t meditate, start a simple 10-minute daily practice. This helps you learn how to observe difficult thoughts without panicking.

Digital Detox: Three days before your ceremony, try to stay off social media and away from stressful news or violent media. It is advisable to spend as much time as possible in peace and, above all, in contact with nature.

We recommend you come with a free mind  and being honest with yourself about the motivation that drives you to work with ayahuasca. Take your time to formulate one or more intentions.

To get the most out of an ayahuasca ceremony, the participant should have clear intentions and an open heart. The attitude you bring will be the determining factor that influences the degree to which you will benefit.
